Equally renowned for producing deep roots reggae, trance-inducing dub and bittersweet lover’s rock, the Mad Professor’s Ariwa Sounds stable is a veritable institution of British reggae.

Prof was ridiculed when he first set up a studio in the front room of his south London home in the late 1970s, but plenty of hits soon followed thanks to his creative drive, perceptive production skills and technical expertise behind the mixing desk; in the best reggae tradition, Ariwa drew from diverse influences to create a unique sound, making use of unbridled artistic ambition to fill any gaps that may have appeared due to a lack of finance. Since those humble beginnings, Mad Professor’s music has seen him circumnavigate the globe countless times and his skills as a dub remixer have drawn requests for collaboration from numerous stars working in different popular genres all over the world, all of which is testament to the pervasive and broadly appealing nature of his creations.

Founded in the summer of l980, Fashion Records has been a rare success amongst UK-based reggae labels, and was one of only a very few British reggae labels to release records that were produced in their own recording studio. The label was the brainchild of John MacGillivray and Chris Lane, two reggae devotees, and was essentially a spin-off from MacGillivray's Dub Vendor record store. The first Fashion release hit number 1 in the UK reggae charts in the summer of 1980 - Dee Sharp's 'Let's Dub It Up' provided a benchmark for British reggae and set a standard that Fashion always lived up to: fine, classy harmonies, punchy rhythms, bright arrangements and above all else, strong songs. In the next few years a veritable who's who of British and Jamaican reggae turned up on the label: Keith Douglas, Carlton Manning (of Carlton & His Shoes), Alton Ellis, Al Campbell, Horace Andy and Johnnie Clarke among others.

Since their humble beginnings as Pama Records back in the 1960s, Jet Star has made the sounds, stories and sensations of Jamaica increasingly accessible to a worldwide audience. Bringing together the rhymes and riddims of Reggae through various outlets (a nightclub, a record shop, a distribution company and the label), Jet Star undeniably helped establish the foundations of Reggae on this side of the Atlantic.

In 2008, after many years of Carl Palmer successfully running Jet Star Phonographics, the company sadly, and surprisingly, folded. Had it not been for Phoenix Music International Ltd, this could have been the end for Jet Star. Today, Phoenix respectfully continues the legacy of Jet Star and its forefathers. The company have injected vibrancy along with a team of relevant experience in key areas of a digital music industry who all share the view of taking the company and its catalogue forward into a new era.

Much has changed since the first days of Jet Star in 1978.  Whether these are changes in music trends or the development of new distribution and listening formats, Jet Star has consistently maintained a significant presence in an ever-competitive market. Having proven itself to stand the test of time, there’s no doubt Jet Star will continue to release great Reggae music over the years to come.

Maximum Sound producer Frenchie’s love of reggae and dancehall began when rifling through his brother’s record collection. In the late 80s, when computer rhythms were setting dancehalls ablaze, the teenager from Paris headed for London, where he befriended John McLean, Chris Peckings and Captain Sinbad . It was they who introduced him to the vibrant London reggae scene. After a while he was invited by John Dub Vendor to become apprentice engineer at Fashion’s A Class studio.  In 1993, he launched Maximum Sound and began producing tracks featuring local and international reggae acts. Frenchie’s love of sound-system fuelled remakes of rhythms such as “Chill Out,” “Waiting In Vain” and “Sensi Addict,” and also spawned the hits that put Maximum Sound on the map.

He shares a commitment to helping newer artists gain more exposure, and especially those delivering a cultural message e.g. Jesse Royal, Exco Levi and Dre Island.  These names are among the new wave of talented youngsters to emerge from Jamaica, and Maximum Sound also works with their counterparts from Europe and beyond, including Randy Valentine and Gappy Ranks.

Mr Derek Fevrier AKA Demondo has had a love affair with music all his life. Called Demondo - meaning ‘of the world’ early on in his life, his nickname became his reality. Demondo has recently been credited with the conceptualisation of the new music genre ‘Nu-Lovers’ after becoming bored with the lack of variation in the reggae beats being produced at the time.

Spurned into action Demondo attempted to create something fresh and set his mind to the task at hand. After several early attempts he finally arrived at the unique ‘Nu-Lovers’ sound in 2006.   Demondo hibernated in his studio for several months in 2010. He was then able to produce over 40 tracks in the Nu Lovers’ style. Choosing to base the music in the lover’s rock genre was a very easy decision on Demondo’s part.

RCM Records UK is the world's only music production company specialising in New  Age Roots  and Neo Reggae music a genre created by founder member Rebel With Creation in the late 80s. Our mission is to bring our unique brand new style of reggae to the masses.

The current trend amongst reggae producers these days is to produce modern sounding copies of traditional reggae rhythm tracks for singers to sing over. These are what's most commonly known as do-overs and although popular in dances do not appeal to the real reggae fans across the globe and is pretty much confined to the UK reggae scene.

At RCM Records the collaboration between in house production and singer yields structured melodies and rhythms using innovative new sounds and styles resulting in a refreshing organic sound that is equally great at home on your stereo as it is in club or dance hall.

Currently working with some the UK's top artists we have releases coming to you very soon on digital download, CD and vinyl. Our roster of artists include Cassie B, Lady Substance, V C, Garnett Cross aka SGT Pepper and a whole host of new UK talent.

Reality Shock is an independent record label representing several of the UK’s leading reggae artists. Founded by Kris Kemist in 2003, the Reality Shock family has rapidly grown from strength to strength, spreading the musical message across the globe and gaining an international reputation as a musical force to be reckoned with. The foundation for Reality Shock was building long before the label’s launch. As a young teenager, Kris Kemist began collecting reggae records and moving with a local soundsystem ‘Psalms 1 Sound’ in Reading, England. As some people may know Reading is a small town with a large Caribbean community and a rich reggae history.

During the 1980’s and 90’s, Reading was full of soundsystems and artists as reggae music was at its peak in the UK. Reading’s world famous community centre ‘Central Youth Provision’ hosted performances from all of the top soundsystems & artists of the day. Despite Central Club loosing it’s entertainment license in the late 90s, many soundmen & artists remained in and around Reading. Inspired by the potential of talented local artists and friends, Kris Kemist began to study the art of music production, recording in a small bedroom studio. The family vibes around the studio grew from strength to strength as artists followed artists, creating a strong unit of likeminded people on a common musical mission. Thus the label Reality Shock was born out of natural progression.

On July 28th 1967, British-based Jamaican music company, Island Records launched a label to showcase the output of one of the most popular and successful producers of the ska and rock steady eras – Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid. The imprint, called ‘Trojan’ after the title Mr. Reid had acquired during his early days in the music business, surprisingly failed to fulfil its potential and folded after a matter of months. And this may well have been the end of the Trojan story had it not been for the creation of a new Jamaican music company, launched in the summer of ’68, which was in need of a suitably dynamic name.

The result of a merger between by Island Records and its distributor B&C, ‘Trojan Records’ promptly launched an ambitious programme of issuing singles on a variety of labels that highlighted music from every producer of note, ranging from British-based music makers such as Robert ‘Dandy’ Thompson, to such esteemed Jamaican operators as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Edward ‘Bunny’ Lee and, of course, Duke Reid himself.

Trojan’s rapid growth during its first year was due in no small part to the development of a working class youth movement that embraced Jamaican music as part and parcel of its culture: Skinheads. The purchasing power of this fast developing demographic resulted in an explosion in sales and in the summer of ‘69 the company enjoyed its first mainstream hit with ‘Red Red Wine’ by a little known British-based singer Tony Tribe. Its success was soon eclipsed when the Upsetters, the Pioneers, Jimmy Cliff and Harry J’s All Stars all made their way onto the higher reaches of the mainstream listings. The Trojan bandwagon rolled on remorselessly into the new decade, with the likes of Desmond Dekker, the Maytals and Bob & Marcia all flying high on the British Pop charts.

The VP Records label was founded in 1979 by the late Vincent "Randy" Chin and his wife Patricia Chin, Chinese Jamaicans who owned the Randy's Records store in Kingston, Jamaica (as seen in the 1978 film Rockers), as well as the Studio 17 recording studios. In the mid-1970s, the Chins moved to New York City, setting up a record store in Brooklyn called VP Records in 1975, from which they sold and distributed records. In 1979, they relocated the store to Jamaica, Queens. In 1993, the record label was formed after the success of the retail store. The name of the label is a product of the first letters in the founders' names, hence the title "VP".

Vincent Chin died in 2003. The label is now run by the Chins' sons Randy and Christopher, while Patricia Chin continues to assist with the maintenance of her late husband's company as well. In 2007, VP Records began re-issuing classic albums from the 1970s and 1980s on the 17 North Parade label, the address of Randy's Studio, where it all began.

VP now has a 10,000 square feet warehouse in Jamaica, Queens. In addition to the main store in Queens, there is another store in Miami that is run by the Chins' daughter Angela and her husband. The company also has offices in Johannesburg, Kingston, Rio de Janeiro, London, Tokyo and Toronto.
